Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

Whilst the patient is on heart/lung bypass machine the heart is stopped. The surgeon then bypasses narrowings in the coronary arteries. This is done by sowing one end of a graft to the aorta and the other end to the coronary artery beyond the blockage (see illustration).
